Iwami Mortar + Pestle

Made to traditional craftsmanship in the Iwami region, Shimane Prefecture, western Japan, this mortar & pestle can be used to grind seeds, nuts and spices.  The hand carved grooves on the inner side of the surubachi (mortar) are carved by hand and aid in the grinding. The surikogi (pestle) is made from sustainably harvested wood. The wood is harvested from the Japanese pepper tree as it is hard and resistant to wear.
